The Point of Supervised Visits

Logo Punt de TrobadaIn many cases of separation or divorce serious disputes occur between couples, leaving children exposed to the ill effects of tensions arising between their parents. If these events are accompanied by traumatic episodes or episodes in which the parents try to manipulate them for their own benefit, the youngsters are doubly affected.

the separation

We want to offer a place where the children’s time is respected, where it is made clear that they have to be away from the quarrels or grudges that have arisen between parents and where they are also away from possible risk situations which they could encounter without the intervention of a professional. The Meeting Point staff form a multi-disciplinary team comprised of people qualified in psychology, social work, pedagogy and social education, all with a wide training in family and child-related work.

At the same time we recognise the existence of a situation in which parents, who despite fulfilling their parental duties, are prevented from having contact with their children as a result of poor relations with the other parent. We believe children should have contact with both parents, as long as this doesn’t affect a child’s safety and correct development.

We consider that, in many cases in which professional intervention would help, work schedules don’t make it easy for that to be arranged. For this reason, we have organised the service so that it can be used at a time and a place that always fits in with the schedules of parents and children, including at weekends and holidays.

Tasks

  • Picking-up and returning the child from the custodial parent or guardian to the non-custodial parent or guardian.
  • Carrying out visits between children and a non-custodial parent or guardian, supervised by qualified staff at the meeting point.
  • Use of the space and material, under the supervision and guidance of trained staff, to help with the meeting of parents with their children.
  • Carrying out the relevant interviews with relatives involved in visiting arrangements.
  • Communicating to the originating authority (court or administration) the outcome of visits or exchanges, incidents that occur and proposals to modify, interrupt or finish the use of the Meeting Point.

In no circumstances will mediation techniques be used, as these are regulated by Legal Act 1/2001, of 15 March, on family mediation in Catalunya and its Rulings, approved by Decree 139/2002, of 14 May, by which the Family Mediation Centre of Catalunya was formed, with the purpose of promoting, administering and opening-up access to mediation.
